Writing the right story

Writing the right story

I found this curious relic when cleaning out my shed over the weekend. I believe it was my grandmother’s. I have no idea why I saved it.  Wondering about its story and whether I should keep it, I decided to text my grandmother’s only two living relatives other than myself–my mother and my brother. My mom said: “Are you sure it was hers? I don’t remember it.” My brother: “Yes, it was hers, but I have no idea what it is. Some sort of bad dream fruit bowl?”  We each have our own story about the bowl. To me, the […]

The nourishment of pleasure

The nourishment of pleasure

We got a bit of snow last weekend, which made me think of my old mare, Sunny, who passed away a couple of years ago. I love this photo that captures one of her greatest pleasures. When the snow was deep enough, the first thing she’d do when I let her out of the barn in the morning was get down on her back, kick up her legs and roll! Even when she was well into her elder years, and suffering aches and pains, she still found a way to delight in it. This memory made me ask myself, how are […]

Fly or flow?

Fly or flow?

Wow, what a week last week! Mine started with a birthday ushering me into a new decade and ended with a presidential election ushering in a new era. And there was a lot of craziness in between, including the moment I saw the turkeys fly. Yes, that’s right. Turkeys fly. Not the type many people eat at Thanksgiving, but wild turkeys. Their speed can reach up to 60 mph for short distances such as when they are escaping a predator like my dog. It was a spectacular sight that happened during the suspended time when we were awaiting the election […]

A birthday prayer for Oneness

A birthday prayer for Oneness

It’s my birthday today, one day ahead of election day. You might guess what my wish will be when I blow out the candles on my cake, and you would be partly right. But what I truly desire is huge. I want us to remember our interconnectedness. Many believe there are 12 intrinsic Universal Laws that when practiced will lead one to a spiritually aligned life. You’ve probably heard of the one called the Law of Attraction. But there is also the Law of Divine Oneness that says separation is an illusion. That every thought, action and event is in some […]

Re-learning to rest

Re-learning to rest

This week, I’m in Texas visiting my mom and re-teaching myself how to rest. Life at an 81-year-old pace is a bit different than what I’m used to. It always takes me a couple of days to ease into a gentler rhythm. Don’t get me wrong, Mom is healthy, vibrant and much more active than most people her age. In fact, of all the things she has taught me over the years, slowing down has not been one of them. But still, life is calmer for me here. I can’t really blame my mother for not helping me build my […]

Listening to my soul voice

Listening to my soul voice

On Saturday afternoon, I traveled to Denver with my friends Amy and Maria to encourage people to register to vote. With our handmade signs and optimistic hearts, we engaged as many people we could. Most had registered, and we were happy to learn that many had already voted. We began our visit to the Westwood neighborhood with a delicious lunch on a restaurant patio. I was immediately struck by the cacophony of the city–motorcycles roaring, loud music blaring from the open windows of cars racing by, the sound of a metal sign being knocked over by the wind. Since Covid […]

Noticing the light

Noticing the light

On Friday we have a new moon, and if you get far enough away from city lights with the right weather conditions, you will notice that the night sky appears darker than it does when the moon is visible. And in this vast darkness you will also notice that the stars seem a little brighter.  Then you might, like me, think, How interesting. We actually need the darkness in order to clearly see the light. I’ve been thinking about this as we head toward cooler weather and shorter days. I’ve been thinking about it as the virus continues and we prepare […]

An octopus and interconnection

An octopus and interconnection

Have you seen the documentary, My Octopus Teacher? It’s about a filmmaker whose life is forever changed when he forges an almost magical relationship with an octopus living in a South African kelp forest. I watched it last week and have been thinking about the concept of interconnection ever since. Synchronicities are a type of connection, so it’s not surprising that the idea of interconnection also appeared to me last week in the Divinestrology October 2020 message written one of my teachers, Sara Wiseman. Sara channels messages from the Universe which I always find inspirational and often mind-blowing. In her message, she writes that […]

Deer wisdom for staying in the flow

Deer wisdom for staying in the flow

This is Buck, a dear deer-friend who adopted my family a few years ago. He visits off and on and makes a point to come by each Fall to eat every single flower off the plants before the first snowfall. This year, the early storm beat him, but shortly afterward, he showed up and polished off everything the snow didn’t get. He’s teaching me about releasing into the flow. You see, I love his summertime visits, but I feel an ache when he comes to tell me summer is over. I don’t want to let go of brightly colored flowers, […]

How to harness the wind

How to harness the wind

A few nights ago, I watched the movie, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind. It’s based on a true story about 13-year-old William Kamkwamba, a Malawian boy who saves his village from famine by figuring out from a science book how to build a wind turbine to pump water to irrigate their crops. His hardships are numerous and heart-wrenching, but he prevails despite almost no one believing he could do it, including his own father. He was just an ordinary boy, yet he harnessed the wind. I imagine if you asked him, he might say he had no other choice. […]
