With the full pink moon rising in Libra on Saturday, I’m thinking about truth.
You see, the pink moon isn’t really pink. It is named for the first flowers of spring, called pink phlox, native to some parts of eastern North America, yet many of us have believed the first moon of spring has a rosy glow. Things aren’t always as they seem.
During a recent trip to visit family, my mother told me a story about my grandmother and a snake that was quite different from what I had always remembered. It wasn’t a big deal, but it was interesting to see how two people can have varying versions of the truth. Truth can be a slippery thing.
Of course, we know that very well these days, and looking at the world situation in one way, we can see the mess we humans have created. From another vantage point, we are in the middle of creative chaos, transforming into another version of ourselves. The Libra archetype teaches us about harmony and balance, urging me to think about balancing all these truths, especially the ones within me.
Truth is different for each of us because invent our truth based on our response to what happens to us. It’s all about the perspective we choose.
Take my Aunt Cynthia for example. She and I were once about the same height, but at age 89, her scoliosis has taken over and she is now a tiny, crooked thing. She raised four unruly kids, prevailed over alcoholism, has weathered the deaths of her beloved husband and her only brother, and now suffers the effects of COPD, yet she’s still the same spitfire she has always been. These days she’s taking care of a daughter who is ill as well as live trapping feral cats, having them neutered and releasing them.
If there were a contest among the elderly in my family, Aunt Cynthia probably has the most reasons to let the vagaries of age get her down, yet she complains the least. She says she wakes up every morning and thanks God she made it through the night.
When talking about plans to celebrate her 90th birthday next year, she amused herself to the point of cackling, then wheezing, when she said, “Y’all had better have the party at the earliest opportunity or I might not be around for it!” Aunt Cynthia’s recipe for life includes heaping doses of humor.
One thing I love about full moons is their power to reveal the truth. They hold an energetic bright light up to what we can choose to change, let go of or heal. This recent evening with my aunt near full moon time exposed some of my own unhelpful perspectives about aging.
Under the magical pretend-pink rays of the Libra moon, I will release my ties to unconscious complaining and balance the culture’s messages about aging with my own truth about how an older woman should live. What are you changing, healing or releasing this full moon?
